Silk Yarn Products in Phnom Srok District, Banteay Meanchey Province

On April 3, 2007, H.E. Dr. Chan Sarun accompanied by His Excellencies, directors and deputy directors of the Departments and relevant agencies under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries took a field trip to find out about the business of silk yarn production of 15 village people in Porumbon and Svay Sar village, Ponley commune, Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey province supported by the Economic Social Relaunch of Northwest Provinces (ECOSORN project). A representative from local authorities made a report of the situation of Phnom Srok district. Phnom Srok is one of eight districts of Banteay Meanchey province with six communes where agriculture is a primary source of income for 95% of the population. In the dry season most of the people usually migrate in search of income for their living.

H.E. Dr. Chan Sarun delivered his speech to the local people about boosting the benefit of the business of silk yarn production. The first benefit is to make employment opportunities to rural women and the second is to create a new business for income generation instead of migrating the third is to promote the value of Khmer silk for better quality to compete against imported silk products. His Excellencie also gave encouragement and suggestions to the local people to expand their business on silk yarn production to their neighbouring villages and communes. Regarding with silk weaving products Mr. Chan Saruth, ECOSORN National Project Director said that this silk weaving production is one of the pilot projects to show the value promotion of the tradition of the Cambodian people living in the northwest provinces, particularly for income generation for the women group in addition to the agricultural production. This means that our silk weaving business is the tradition and Khmer silk is a heritage given by the ancestors. Therefore, ECOSORN project focused its attention on reforming and promoting the income generation for women group in northwest provinces especially Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey province where it’s well-known of silk production. Our pilot project is in Ponley commune, Phnom Srok district, Banteay Meanchey province, but we will expand our projects of silk production to many other places not only in Banteay Meanchey but also in Siem Reap province as well.
